Why this project?
The reason is the demolition of the W&N building. A large part of FCO's storage is now located there. These spaces will soon disappear and must be emptied before demolition.
But there is more at play. In past years, FCO had plenty of storage space on campus, so we didn't always have to look critically at what we were storing. By now, all available storage spaces on campus are in use. We do not always have a clear view of exactly what is stored and why. There are also still few clear agreements about storage.
Now that the pressure on storage space is increasing, this project will help us gain a better understanding of what we are currently using - both goods and spaces - and what we will need in the future. So that together we can arrive at appropriate solutions and workable arrangements.
What do we want to achieve?
We are working towards a clear and practical way of dealing with storage. This means:
- better understanding of what we store, where and why;
- clear agreements about storage and its management;
- smarter deployment and more efficient use of available storage space on campus; and
- a practical solution to the loss of storage space in the W&N building.
The goal is simple: ensure that storage remains well-suited to the work we do at FCO and to the space available there.
How do we approach that?
We start with conversations with departments that use storage spaces. Together we look at:
- what items are stored where;
- why it is needed; and
- what is important in the process.
We also map out all of FCO's storage areas on campus. First in the W&N building, then also in the other buildings. Not only do we look at how we use them now and what stock is stored there, but also at how spaces can best be used in the future.
On that basis, we make agreements about how we organize storage in the future. And we work towards an appropriate new layout of the available space.
