SDG Academy Recap: Expert Insights into the Outcomes of COP30

Share
5 January 2026
Just before Christmas, we welcomed a full house at the Green Office VU for a special edition of the SDG Academy, hosted by the Amsterdam Sustainability Institute (ASI). It was inspiring to see a packed room of engaged students, researchers, and professionals ready to unpack the complex outcomes of this year’s climate conference.

The key takeaway from our experts was a distinct sense of ambivalence. While the conference concluded with the adoption of the "Global Mutirão" (meaning "collective efforts"), the discussion highlighted the tension between the urgent need for faster action versus the nuanced progress actually achieved.

Prof. Philipp Pattberg guided the evening, providing context on Global Sustainability Politics. He walked us through the technical outcomes of the "Global Mutirão," emphasizing the synergies between climate, biodiversity, and land/ocean degradation, while critically noting the disappointments regarding food systems and fossil fuels.

Fresh from the negotiations, Daniel Muth shared critical reflections on international carbon trading and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Drawing on his research into global climate governance, he offered a deep dive into potential new sources of climate finance and how the EU navigates this complex institutional landscape.

Shifting the focus to future generations, Stephanie Okafor brought a crucial perspective on youth engagement. With a background in Global Health and Medicine, she discussed the preparations for COP30 and presented the "Storybook COP30"—an impactful project created by the Jonge Klimaatbeweging to visualize the future of climate action.

Finally, focusing on the intersection of gender, youth, and climate, Cléo Dorel-Watson addressed the vital question of inclusion. She shared insights from her time in Belém regarding the Gender Action Plan and the negotiations surrounding National Adaptation Plans, reminding us that the transition must be inclusive to be effective.

Is the COP format working?

The evening concluded with a sharp Q&A regarding the suitability of the COP format. We debated the tension between the urgent need for action versus the nuanced progress achieved, specifically addressing the vehement opposition to fossil fuel phase-outs by petrostates. The consensus was a sense of ambivalence: while there is hope in new missions, the gap between pledges and enforceable commitments remains wide.

Thank you to everyone who joined the session and stayed for the drinks afterwards. The energy in the room gives us hope for the work ahead!
