29 January 2026
Do you feel engaged in the future of the Faculty of Science? Would you like to contribute ideas on how we can tackle challenges in a smart way and deliver on our quality? Then this is your chance. Run for election for the ODC of the Faculty of Science.

Elections for the Works Council and the faculty ODCs (Works Council and Subcommittees) will be held from 16 to 22 March. This is an important moment. It is about who will represent us in discussions about matters that have a real impact here.

Sign up for the ODC before 10 February. Send an email to Ivo van Stokkum, chair of the ODC: ivo@nat.vu.nl.

What does the ODC do?
Every month, there is a meeting between the ODC, the FSR and theFaculty Board. These meetings discuss strategic topics such as business operations, research, education and valorisation. The compensation for the department is 2 hours per week. The term of office is from 1 September 2026 to 1 September 2029.

Dean Aletta Kraneveld on the ODC
“At the central level, VU Amsterdam has a Works Council (OR) for staff and a University Student Council for students. But the real translation into our daily practice happens here, at our faculty. For our staff, that is the of the Faculty of Science – a committee of the OR, but with its feet firmly planted in our labs and lecture halls. For our students, there is the Faculty Student Council. And for the quality of each individual programme, there are the Programme Committees, where students and lecturers work together to shape the education.”

The faculty faces major (financial) challenges. Nevertheless, as the board, we want to maintain and strengthen our top quality in education and research. What I have learned over the past three and a half years as dean of our wonderful faculty is this: without lively and committed faculty participation, we will not succeed."
