Response to media reports regarding the student gathering incident

Share
8 January 2026
Several media outlets are reporting on an incident that occurred late last year on the VU campus. In this incident, a student was injured. We are very affected that this could have happened on our campus and are taking the situation very seriously.

We are in contact with all concerned about this and have offered support to the victim. We have indicated that for the sake of privacy of all involved we cannot go into the content of the incident. We understand that this can sometimes feel like information is missing and that this actually creates more turmoil, questions and concerns.

We want to assure everyone that ensuring everyone's safety on our campus is our highest priority and misconduct, harassment and violence will not be tolerated. We will speak to people about this and in far-reaching cases, an investigation will be launched to take appropriate action. Serious violations and criminal offenses are reported or support provided to those who wish to report them to the police.

At the same time, we subscribe to the importance of careful and independent investigation. For that reason, we do not make statements about individual students or employees, nor about ongoing investigations or possible measures. This restraint is essential to respect the privacy of all involved and to ensure the safety and integrity of the process.

We want to emphasize that anyone who is dealing with or has questions or is experiencing concerns related to safety can contact the Safety and Behavior Team. They are ready to listen, support and discuss appropriate steps where necessary.
