PPE's study association KallioPPE went to RTL Nieuws to visit PPE alumnus Simba Martens.
Last month, KallioPPE had the opportunity to visit RTL Nieuws in Hilversum as part of our career committee activities programme. During the visit, students were welcomed by PPE alumnus Simba Martens, journalist and foreign affairs editor at RTL Nieuws, together with one of RTL Nieuws’ television presenters.
The visit offered students a behind-the-scenes insight into how a professional newsroom operates on a daily basis. Participants were shown different areas of the RTL offices and learned more about the process of producing national and international news, from editorial meetings to live broadcasting and television production.
In addition, students had the chance to engage in an interactive Q&A session with Simba Martens and the presenter, where he spoke about his experiences after studying PPE, his career path in journalism, and the challenges of working in media and international reporting. Students were able to ask questions regarding career opportunities, the role of journalists in today’s political climate, and the skills needed to work in the media sector.
