PhD candidate or postdoc? Sign up for peer coaching

Share
13 January 2026
Peer coaching is a form of learning in which a group of 8 to 10 colleagues with similar functions support each other on issues from day-to-day work.

The sessions are guided by a facilitator (which could be you). The facilitator keeps the process structured, ensures a safe and open atmosphere, and encourages everyone to participate actively. Everything that is discussed remains confidential.

Peer coaching is suitable for any work-related topic: expectations from your supervisor, dealing with work pressure, difficult decisions, collaboration - anything that is on your mind.

Who is peer coaching for?

PhD candidates and postdocs who are affiliated with VU Amsterdam until at least October 2026.

Why join?

As a peer
Intervision helps you look at your work from a fresh perspective. You learn from others’ experiences, discover new approaches, and receive support from colleagues facing similar challenges. Peers often offer insights you may not have thought of yourself.

As a facilitator
You learn how to guide peer coaching groups, sharpen your communication skills, and contribute to the development of your colleagues. You are responsible for the structure of the sessions and for creating a safe environment in which everyone feels comfortable sharing. After completing the programme, facilitators receive a certificate; PhD facilitators also earn 0.5 EC.

What does the programme look like?

Facilitators
We will select 10 participants who would like to become facilitators. They will take part in a training programme consisting of four group training sessions of 2 hours and one individual coaching session of 1 hour.

In March, facilitators start with the first part of the training. After each training session and the coaching session, they independently schedule five peer coaching meetings of 1.5 to 2 hours with their own group, putting what they have learned directly into practice.

Peers
The remaining participants will join a group as peers. From March until October 2026, you will meet five times.

All participants will receive a reader in advance with background information on peer coaching and the working method.

Time commitment

As a peer
Approximately 10 hours: five meetings of 1.5–2 hours, plus time to read the reader.

As a facilitator
Approximately 20 hours: four training sessions of 2 hours, one coaching session of 1 hour, five group meetings of 1.5–2 hours, plus time to read the reader.

Quality & feedback from previous editions

The previous edition received excellent evaluations, with an average score of 4.8 out of 5.

Participants shared, for example:

  • “It has been a good support system to have others, who are on the same path as me, give insights on how to navigate challenging times.”
  • “The opportunity to meet new people, seeing similar struggles and learning from shared experiences.”
  • “Effectivity in my work and guidance on the journey of learning to be a researcher.”
  • “More awareness of what is important to focus on, new strategies, and a sense of community.”

Costs and registration

Participation as a peer is free of charge, but not without commitment. Peer coaching only works if everyone is actively involved and attends the sessions. For facilitators, we ask a contribution of €85 to cover part of the costs. This fee will be charged to your department.

Registration is open from 5 January to 6 February 2026 via this registration form.
