A significant proportion of chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease, are linked to lifestyle and nutrition. A growing body of research shows that the gut microbiome plays a key role in this. However, we still know relatively little about what we can do ourselves to support gut health, even though this is precisely where opportunities lie to prevent disease.
That is why Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is launching a large-scale study involving more than 10,000 participants. Previous research by VU Amsterdam has shown that people are more likely to make lasting improvements to their eating habits when they track their diet. In this way, concrete dietary choices can have a long-term positive impact on the gut microbiome and overall health.
