The goal of the database is to advance the islands’ national adaptation strategies and to provide inspiration, practical examples and guidance to make informed and transparent decisions for a more resilient future.
More than 100 adaption options
The database provides a structured overview of more than a 100 adaptation options relevant to island contexts. It can be used by policymakers, professionals and students who are interested in taking measures. Users can explore options through thematic filters and access qualitative information on feasibility, co-benefits, equity considerations, and practical examples.
The database was developed within the International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Areas (IPDC) programme and builds on earlier work on climate scenarios and climate impact atlases for the region. The project was led by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and co-developed in close collaboration with the University of Curaçao, the University of Aruba, the University of St. Martin, and a consortium of regional and international knowledge partners, including Climate Adaptation Services (CAS).
Co-creation with local stakeholders
The development of the database was informed by focus groups held in Curaçao, Aruba, and on the island of St. Martin. These sessions brought together policymakers, academic staff, and societal stakeholders to reflect on usability, relevance, and long-term governance needs, ensuring alignment with local institutional and community contexts.
The database is hosted within the existing Climate Impact Atlases for Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Martin, ensuring continuity with earlier IPDC work and long-term accessibility. It directly supports national adaptation planning processes on each island.
