Anyone walking across the VU campus square can’t miss them: since Tuesday 29 September, the life-size white letters spelling ‘VRIJE DENKERS VU’. Students and staff celebrated the moment together, with music, fries and a good dose of late summer sun.
"Everyone who works or studies at VU Amsterdam is part of our community of Free Thinkers," says Executive Board president Margrethe Jonkman. "Free thinking means that you use your imagination, dare to ask questions, examine your own assumptions and are open to someone else's perspective. That fits in with who we are as VU, and we can be proud of that."
Mission
The letters give VU Amsterdam's annual theme a visible place on campus. They refer to the mission from the VU Strategic Plan 2026 - 2030: Free thinkers for people, society and planet. In the middle of the square, they invite everyone who studies or works here to share that ambition.
