Just like every year, the VU welcomed the best 168 students from the first and second class of high school to the Junior Math Olympiad (JWO).
The Olympiad is the final of the Kangoeroe competition and is organized by the VU department of Mathematics in collaboration with the Dutch Math Olympiad.
In the morning, the students and their parents learned about how we can mathematically describe the interaction between compartments on our brain in a lecture by dr. Rikkert Hindriks. After the lecture, the competition began and the students had to solve exercises such as “The number N is formed by putting 100 times the digit 3 in a row. What number do you get if you add all the digits of N2?”
After the match, Vierkant voor Wiskunde organized a workshop on creating polyhydra with playing cards, which led to the creation of some beautiful structures. The day was concluded with the award ceremony in which the top 10 of the first and second class were announced and all went home with a nice present.
