International Womens Day: Beyond Gender Inequalities @ VU

Share
17 February 2026
Join us on 9 March for International Women’s Day at VU, exploring intersectional safety, inclusive education, and academic success.

This day is open to everyone, regardless of gender, and we welcome you to bring your fellow students and colleagues to this substantive celebration. The programme starts at 13:00 and continues until 18:00, ending with drinks and snacks.

The afternoon opens with a welcome by Marina de Regt, followed by a short keynote from Ismintha Waldring on intersectionality, gender inequalities, and why these issues matter in academia.

Session 1: Student safety and inclusive education (13:30 – 15:00)
In this session, Marina de Regt and Saartje Tack will present the Beyond Gender Inequalities course, highlighting key themes explored within the network: social safety, gender-inclusive education, and toxic environments at the university, alongside the accompanying e-zines. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on social safety for students, featuring representatives from Women in STEM, FAM, and other student organisations, moderated by Miranda van Holland. The session concludes with a talk on inclusive education by Selin Çakmak and Ermelinda Jaku from the VU Center for Teaching and Learning.

Tea Break (15:00 – 15:30)

Session 2: Academic success and safety (15:30 – 17:00)
Zakia Essanhaji will open the session with a talk on what success in academia means beyond gender equality policies, using an intersectional perspective. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on experiences, practices, and policies at VU, with Monika Kirloskar-Steinbach, Amisah Bakuri, Selin Çakmak and Ermelinda Jaku. The session ends with a wrap-up discussion on how VU policies and practices can become more intersectional.

Borrel (17:00 – 18:00)
