The book explores how scholars, teachers and practitioners navigate the emotions, and corresponding ethical dilemmas, of working in the field of mass atrocities. Being continuously exposed to the suffering of the victims, the crimes of the perpetrators and the lasting impact on post-conflict societies, may take a toll on the wellbeing of scholars, students and practitioners. These inadvertent consequences have long been ignored, in research and in practice, but lead to ethical conundrums. To what extent do negative emotions influence the work and decision-making of scholars, teachers and practitioners, and should they play a role?
The book will be launched with a roundtable discussion with Thijs Bouwknegt, Marije Luitjens, Caecilia van Peski, Maartje Weerdesteijn and Martin Witteveen which will be moderated by Alette Smeulers.
