Another regional public transport strike on 22 October: teaching will go ahead

Share
19 October 2026

Regional public transport workers will once again be on strike on Thursday 22 October. Teaching activities and exams on campus will go ahead as scheduled. Do you travel to VU Amsterdam by regional public transport? Please be prepared for cancellations and delays and plan your journey carefully.

Local public transport services in Amsterdam (GVB) are not taking part in the strike and will continue to operate. Regional bus and train services may be cancelled. Please allow extra time for your journey and check alternative travel options in advance.

Teaching and exams will go ahead
Teaching activities will, in principle, go ahead as scheduled on strike days. This also applies to classes where attendance is compulsory. Lecturers may make alternative arrangements if a strike affects their teaching. Please keep a close eye on Canvas for any changes.

Exams and tests will also go ahead as scheduled. The existing regulations regarding exams will remain in effect. Students are therefore advised to consider alternative ways of travelling to campus in advance if necessary.

Exams at Emergohal and the VU Sports Centre
Do you have an exam at Emergohal? Please be aware that regional public transport services to this location may also be affected by the strike, both during the day and in the evening. Plan your journey in advance and allow extra time for travelling and walking. The VU Sports Centre can be reached using Amsterdam’s local public transport services. If you have an exam there, please check the latest travel information before setting off.

Staff
If you are expected to be on campus on a strike day and rely on regional public transport for your journey, please be prepared for possible cancellations and check alternative travel options in advance. If necessary, discuss the situation with your manager.

The VU campus will remain open as usual on strike days, and other activities will also go ahead as scheduled unless the organiser communicates otherwise.

Further strikes announced until Christmas
The trade unions have announced that they intend to take industrial action in regional public transport every week until Christmas, unless an agreement is reached on a new collective labour agreement. The exact dates of the strikes will only be announced shortly beforehand. We therefore advise you to keep an eye on the news and check the latest travel information from your transport operator over the coming period.
