That’s why we are building a professional, centralised team of certified confidential counsellors: a team that is approachable, accessible, and available to all.
Would you like to help create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for work and study? Then this is the perfect moment to apply to become a confidential counsellor.
Your impact matters
As a confidential counsellor, you support staff and/or students and/or PhD candidates who are dealing with inappropriate behaviour—such as (sexual) intimidation, discrimination, bullying, or aggression. You offer a listening ear, help explore possible next steps, and, when necessary, refer individuals to other support resources within or outside the university.
But your role goes beyond individual support: you are also an ambassador for social safety within the community of VU Amsterdam. You provide informational sessions, identify systemic challenges, and contribute to strengthening a culture of openness, equality, and security.
Professional development and support
Joining the new central team of confidential counsellors means more opportunities for support, training, and collaboration. Before you begin, you will complete an LVV-accredited training programme to become a certified confidential counsellor. After certification, you’ll have access to continuing education, peer supervision, and a central network of like-minded colleagues—all dedicated to making a difference together.
The role requires a an average commitment of at least 8 hours per week (0.2 FTE), up to a maximum of 16 hours per week (0.4 FTE). These hours are funded through a central budget and can be integrated into your current contract in consultation with your supervisor—or arranged as an extension to your existing role. This ensures a healthy balance between your core responsibilities—whether as a researcher, PhD candidate, or support professional—and this meaningful new position.
Who we’re looking for
This position is open to both academic and support staff. What matters most is that you are approachable, empathetic, and discreet. You are a good listener, able to act without judgment, and sensitive to complex or delicate situations. You have insight into social dynamics, the confidence to ask probing questions, and the presence of mind to remain silent when necessary.
We recognise that the role of a confidential counsellor requires time, attention, and care. At the same time, it offers a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth and a chance to contribute to the broader organisational culture. For many colleagues, this role means making an impact that reaches beyond their discipline. You support people at their most vulnerable moments and help foster a university where everyone feels seen and heard. You will develop new skills, gain fresh perspectives on the organisation, and contribute to something larger than yourself. Thanks to structured support and clear agreements with your supervisor, your workload will remain manageable.
Diversity wanted
VU Amsterdam is one of the most diverse universities in the Netherlands, and we are committed to reflecting that diversity in our team of confidential counsellors. We therefore encourage applications from individuals whose backgrounds and lived experiences enrich the fabric of the VU community.
