Through an engaging conversation with Cultural Anthropologist Sinan Çankaya and Ismail Ziada, this session will focus on the Nakba in Palestine, both as a series of historic events, and as an ongoing process. Through the specific case of the ongoing Nakba, we aim to have a broader conversation on academic responsibility in the face of colonial histories and presents of displacement and ethnic cleansing unfolding in different parts of the world, such as North Darfur, Nagorno Karabakh, and Kashmir.
The guest speakers this time will be Ismail Ziada and Sinan Çankaya. Ismail Ziada is a Palestinian from Gaza. He filed a civil lawsuit in the Netherlands against Israeli military officials in 2014 seeking justice. For Ziada, this legal battle is not just personal, it’s a form of resistance and a way to hold power accountable. Sinan Çankaya is a Cultural Anthropologist and the writer of the books “Mijn Ontelbare Identiteiten” (2020) and “Galmende Geschiedenissen” (2025).
