Wan Fokkink involved in developing methodology for synthesis-based engineering

Ministry of Infrastructure and Water management announced that synthesis-based engineering is now an integral part of developing control software for bridges and waterway locks in the Netherlands. From specifications of the controlled system and of the requirements, control software can be synthesized automatically.

This methodology was developed in a series of projects with Eindhoven University of Technology, in which Wan Fokkink from the Department of Computer Science has been closely involved. Since 2012 he is part-time professor of Model-Based Systems Engineering at that university.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water management will start applying Synthesis-Based Engineering (SBE) regarding the maintenance of movable bridges and water locks, so it can better understand control requirements before they get adopted in tender documentation. This should lead to more efficient cooperation with market participants who implement operating software for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water management. SBE, TNO-ESI and the Control Systems Technology section at the TU/e have worked toward this result for several years. After successful pilots in market consultations, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water management decided to adopt this decision.
