This metro connection will provide students and staff with a direct route between the two universities starting April 1, 2027, with the hope that UvA and VU students will get to know each other.
A Metro Designed Specifically for Students
The University Line is tailored to the needs of students. At the front, you'll find a quiet space where you can study, scroll, or just decompress from your caffeine-induced anxiety. At the back, there’s a networking zone where you can mingle. Halfway through, there’s a motivation corner, where affirmations play over the speakers: "You are exactly where you need to be (unless you have class in 10 minutes)."
Student Metro Drivers and Free Travel
To provide employment opportunities, we will only hire students to work on the line as student metro drivers. Students interested in this unique opportunity should keep an eye on the UvA and VU newsletters in the coming weeks. Travel is free for students. Instead of using an OV-chip card, you scan your student ID at the entry gates.
Sustainable and Innovative
The University Line is not only a practical solution but also a step forward in sustainable and innovative student transportation. The project is part of a broader mission to give our universities a little more "main character energy" and to connect Amsterdam's students with one another. Not only literally, but also figuratively. Sometimes, connection begins with just a conversation on the metro.
The first metro will depart on April 1, 2027, provided that the schedule, permit applications, participation events, vibration impact studies, and the astrological alignment of Mercury all align. Until then, we are working hard on optimization, with feedback from students, staff, and at least three task forces with vague names.
Update April 1: Unfortunately, the University Line has proven to be a bit too ambitious. Construction plans have been halted with immediate effect.
