The discussion was chaired by Denise Maljers, President of the KNGMG (the professional association for earth scientists).
The discussion focused on exploring the possibilities for Earth sciences, given its considerable societal relevance. This discussion represents a final effort by both the sector and VU Amsterdam to explore realistic options before a definitive decision regarding the proposed reorganisation is made.
This initial meeting provided sufficient grounds for follow-up discussions on how elements of the current programme, including education, research, and infrastructure, might realistically be retained. The possibilities will be explored jointly in the coming weeks. For specific questions and issues, input will also be sought from staff and students.
All parties hope for a positive outcome. The follow-up discussions will therefore take place shortly, with the aim of clarifying any realistic options before the summer. In the meantime, VU Amsterdam will continue with preparatory steps in advance of the definitive decision on the reorganisation, with the goal of providing staff and students with clarity before the summer.
