Update: Demolition and renovation W&N building

Share
1 August 2025
Demolition work on the W&N building is in full swing.

Large parts of the old Cyclotron building have already been demolished. Work will continue in the coming period. Not only on the old Cyclotron building, but also on the CD area behind the VU StartHub.

What are we going to do?

In the coming period, we will be carrying out various activities that will be visible from the campus grounds.

  • Manual demolition

Small parts will be carefully removed by hand using small hand tools. This helps to minimise dust and noise. The staff carrying out this work may be partially hanging from the building. These staff members are specially trained for this purpose and secured to a safety structure in the building.

  • Mechanical demolition

We will also remove larger structural components. We will do this using a telehandler and a mobile crane. Both machines will remain safely behind the fences. These machines can be noisy and generate dust, which you may notice while working or studying.

  • Asbestos removal

Parts of the building known to contain very limited quantities of asbestos will also be removed. We will remove these asbestos-containing components in full compliance with all regulations and guidelines. Therefore, you may encounter men in white suits behind the construction fences. The asbestos-containing waste will be disposed of separately at a designated location.

What will you notice?

We are doing everything we can to minimise any inconvenience. However, you may experience the following:

  • The containers are being delivered to and from the site by trucks. You may therefore see large trucks on the campus grounds.
  • The demolition may cause additional noise and dust during working hours.
  • You may see men in white suits walking around the building.
  • You may see employees of demolition contractor Adex working in the openings of the building.

How long will it take?

We will be carrying out this work over the next month. We are not working continuously, so there will be busier periods and quieter periods.
