These workshops should help these professionals to better organize their work activities, so that they will have more time for the contacts with their patients. The workshop The Entrepreneurial Family Doctor has already been developed , both for existing GPs (for the national trade association of GPs, LHV) and GPs in training (at the Amsterdam UMC). Recently, the new workshop The Entrepreneurial Psychiatrist has been developed, in collaboration with Parnassia Group Rijnmond Group for Mental Health Care, a leading organization in the training of psychiatrists in the Netherlands.
On 14 April, the first workshop took place, at the main office of Parnassia Group. Ten psychiatrists in training participated in this workshop. The specific aim of this workshop was to develop the entrepreneurial attitude of the participants, in an accessible way. The development was aimed at practitioners, employees and sole self-employed people. One question that was dealt with, what kind of entrepreneurial type do you think you will be in the future? The most prominent answers were: accidental entrepreneur (‘I never expected to be an entrepreneur, but still I have become one’) and social entrepreneur (‘I want to make a contribution to a better world in a commercial way’). Next to that, attention was paid to the development of entrepreneurial competences, especially those competences that were perceived as very important but poorly developed. Two entrepreneurial competences stood out: realistic goal setting and delegation ability. The workshop was ended with a group discussion how to further develop certain entrepreneurial competences. The participants were invited to contact the moderator of the workshop for the further development of their most urgent entrepreneurial competences.
According to Nico van Beveren, Director of Psychiatric Residency Training at Parnassia Rijnmond Group for Mental Health Care, the workshop had a clear contribution: ‘This workshop clearly contributes to the preparation of our trainees for their future careers as psychiatrists, especially concerning their managerial and leadership roles’. The moderator of the workshop, Prof. Enno Masurel, director of the VU Center for Entrepreneurship, agreed: ‘With this workshop, we once again showed that entrepreneurship training can be applied very broadly’.
