Termination of Surfdrive from 1 July 2025: What does this mean for you?

Share
4 March 2025
The VU will discontinue Surfdrive as of July 1, 2025. This means that from that date onwards, you will no longer have access to your files and shared folders on Surfdrive. We understand that this may raise questions, and we are here to guide you step by step in transitioning to an alternative solution.

What to Expect

Alternative storage services are available, and we have created clear guides to assist you with the transition. You still have plenty of time to safely transfer your files.

What Can You Do Now?

  • Review your files to determine which ones you still need and which can be deleted.
  • Use the available guides, which you can find on Sharepoint, to transfer your files to an alternative storage service.
  • Do you have sensitive or shared files? The IT Service Desk can advise you on a secure transition.
  • Use the storage finder to determine where your research data files should be migrated.

Where is my data stored?

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam replaces the SURFDrive service with various (cloud) platforms. These platforms are partly autonomous, meaning they are managed in-house, while we also use external cloud solutions, including SAP centers and Microsoft data centers in Western Europe. In all cases, we carefully assess where data is stored, with a focus on security, compliance, and efficiency. We closely follow the latest developments in this field and take additional measures when necessary to ensure the protection and reliability of your data. All other existing services provided by SURF to VU Amsterdam will remain unchanged.

Support and Questions

We will keep you updated regularly via email and internal channels. All guides and instructions can be found on Sharepoint. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the IT Service Desk.
