In her dissertation "Where law meets space: The regulation of refugee camps in Europe", Isabella examines to what extent the laws that apply in refugee camps in Europe can be qualified as exceptional from a legal perspective. Drawing on empirical legal studies, she analyses three refugee camps along three main axes: applicable legislation, relevant policy rules, and case law of the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Her project aims to generate knowledge on the modes and nature of legal exceptions adopted by legislators, policymakers, and courts, and to explore how these exceptions are justified and how their meaning evolves across time, levels, and legal fields.
