Opinion pieces on AI: VU Amsterdam teaching community in dialogue

Share
11 November 2025
How do we, as a university, deal with AI? That question gained new attention with the publication of the AI Literacy Companion on 15 September, then still called the AI Literacy Handbook. The Companion guides the development of students’ AI literacy. Three recent opinion pieces show how broadly this discussion is taking place across VU Amsterdam.

Legal philosopher Sjoerd Oppenheim raised critical and important questions about academic development in response to the AI Literacy Companion. Full professor Brian Tjemkes and assistant professor Luuk Glasbeek emphasized in their reply that an evolving Companion creates room to experiment, reflect and learn: “It illustrates the adaptive capacity of VU Amsterdam.” Vice-Dean and Portfolio Holder for Education Pieter van Beukering discussed the AI Literacy Companion and how the university should approach AI: “The question is not whether we should deal with this, but how we can ensure that our education remains relevant, challenging, and meaningful.”

From different disciplines, colleagues are exploring the same central question: what does AI mean for our education? And in this context, researchers are reflecting on the question: what does it mean for society and what should our research focus on? Responses from the community are integral and will contribute to the periodic improvements previously announced. The openness with which staff write, question and build on each other’s perspectives shows how valuable this dialogue is to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam: core to our educational values as demonstrated in the MIXED model.
