Amsterdam police ends occupation of BelleVUe building on VU Campus
On Wednesday afternoon, the Amsterdam police ended the occupation of the BelleVUe building on the campus of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This followed repeated, unsuccessful requests by VU to the demonstrators to end the occupation. VU Amsterdam has filed a formal complaint for unlawful trespass. The Amsterdam police ultimately vacated the premises at the request of the local authorities.
As a university, we are committed to constructive dialogue and mutual respect for each other's views. Unfortunately, the circumstances today left us with no other option, and police intervention became necessary to ensure the safety of our campus.
On Wednesday 9 April, a peaceful protest began on the campus square, organised by students of VU Amsterdam. During the protest, demonstrators were asked not to disrupt educational or research activities. Within a short time, however, the protest developed into an occupation of the BelleVUe building.
Update 9 April 2025 – 12:30 PM
With this action, the demonstrators aim to pressure VU Amsterdam to sever its ties with Israeli universities. VU Amsterdam recognises the concerns about the situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories. As a university, we condemn all forms of violence.
We respect freedom of expression and consider the right to protest important. However, occupying buildings is not permitted. The demonstrators have been addressed and asked to leave the building. As this request has not been complied with, VU has involved the competent authorities.
It is essential that the safety of students and staff is not put at risk, and that education, research and other activities are not hindered or disrupted in any way. Alternative locations have been arranged for today's scheduled educational activities in the BelleVUe building. Students and lecturers have been informed accordingly.
