The University Chair (UC) aligns with the national Recognition & Rewards policy. Rector Magnificus Jeroen Geurts, who serves as co-chair of the national steering committee, is committed to a cultural shift within academia that gives greater space to diverse forms of talent. “We are moving from a one-dimensional view of success toward a richer understanding of academic value,” says Geurts. “True progress arises when research, education, and societal engagement strengthen one another. With this new direction, we recognize that talent comes in many forms, and it is precisely in this diversity that we find our strength. Together, we are building a university that is not only excellent, but also inclusive, inspiring, and future-oriented.”
VU University Chair
The VU University Chair (UC) is both an appointment and an honorary distinction. Associate professors and recently appointed full professors will, starting in November 2025, be eligible for nomination based on their contributions to education and societal impact. The UC positions will be explicitly opened for a period of at least three and up to five years in these focus domains, stimulating career advancement and creating more role models. Selected candidates will receive the title VU University Chair, along with an attractive package of resources to further strengthen their leadership profile.
Deans will receive an invitation to nominate candidates for the VU University Chair. The deadline for nominations is 24 April 2026, and the selection process will take place from late May to early June 2026.
