New on campus square: calisthenics

Share
2 April 2025
Have you seen the new sports equipment in the campus square yet?

At the calisthenics machines, you can do various strength exercises, suitable for a quick move in between your daily clothes, but also for a full workout. The field is freely accessible.

Did you know that the surface is made of old sports shoes? By using natural aggregate and recycled rubber granules from worn-out sports shoes, this floor is circular and innovative. The floor is also highly permeable; rainwater is quickly drained through the surface.

What is calisthenics?

Calisthenics is a form of strength training involving various exercises that target the major muscle groups. The exercises are performed with minimal use of equipment; mainly using your own body weight.

The installation of the calisthenics equipment was made possible by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Sportcentrum VU and VUvereniging.

Use beach volleyball or basketball court?

Of course, you can still play basketball, beach volleyball or beachtennis on the campus square. No ball or racket with you? No problem. Just go to the Security desk in the Main Building (KC-04). If you leave your e-mail address and phone number, you will be given a ball or racket (for beachtennis) to borrow. The courts can be used between 08.30 and 23.00. Subject, of course, to the field not being reserved. Would you like to reserve a beach volleyball court? You can do so at Sportcentrum VU.
