The ceremony brought together prominent academic leaders, including Prof. dr. Jeroen Geurts, Rector Magnificus of VU Amsterdam, and Prof. dr. Yoshiaki Terumichi, President of Sophia University, alongside members of VU’s MIRAI Taskforce for Japan. Rector Geurts underscored VU’s Broader Mind philosophy, to cultivate students as global citizens through interdisciplinary approaches to societal challenges. President Terumichi echoed these ideals, with Sophia University’s ethos of “For Others, With Others,” which focuses on nurturing global citizens by cultivation of global and local perspectives in the educational curriculum.
President Terumichi articulated a compelling vision of Sophia University as a “Global One Campus,” promoting global leadership and cross-disciplinary inquiry, while Prof. Gregor Halff, Dean of VU’s Faculty of Social Sciences, stressed the pivotal role of international networks in sustaining democratic societies. Reflecting this synergy, VU Amsterdam will establish its Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities in April 2025, advancing interdisciplinary research and education.
