Mauro Mastrogiacomo, Associate Professor at the Department of Economics of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Economist at De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), has been appointed as member of a commission established by the Ministry of Finance (FIN) and the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning (VRO) to propose a reform of the mortgage interest deduction for loans exceeding 30 years. This issue is of major importance for Dutch households: starting in 2031, certain long-term mortgages will no longer qualify for the deduction. However, detailed information on mortgage terms is currently lacking. Dr. Mastrogiacomi contributes to the commission by providing quantitative analyses to estimate the fiscal costs of various reform options and by clarifying their distributional impact across different groups of taxpayers. The commission’s findings will inform the new government’s policy decision on the future of mortgage interest deductibility. The final report is expected to be completed by early 2026.
