Just like every year, the VU welcomed the best 163 students from the first and second class of high school to the Junior Math Olympiad (JWO).
The Olympiad is the final of the Kangoeroe competition and is organized by the VU department of Mathematics in collaboration with the Dutch Math Olympiad.
In the morning, the students and their parents learned about the scheduling of hospital beds in a lecture by Prof. dr. Ger Koole. After the lecture, the match began and the students had to solve exercises such as “What is the smallest positive integer consisting of digits 1 to 4 in which each of combinations 12, 13, 14, 21, 23, 24, 31, 32, 34, 41, 42, 43 occurs?”
After the match, Vierkant voor Wiskunde organized a workshop on creating polyhydra with playing cards, which led to the creation of some beautiful structures. The day was concluded with the award ceremony in which the top 10 of the first and second class were announced and all went home with a nice present.
