Ilse Aben played a key role in the development of the TROPOMI satellite instrument, which has become a vital tool in global efforts to monitor and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Her innovative use of satellite-based measurements and smart algorithms has led to the identification and mitigation of methane leaks across the globe — from oil fields in Central Asia to coal mines and landfills. These efforts have significantly contributed to international climate agreements, including the Global Methane Pledge.
Ilse has a long and valued history with our department. Since 2001, she served multiple terms as bijzonder hoogleraar connected to our QMLA group, and was a co-promotor of PhD research conducted jointly between our department and atmospheric science groups. In 2021, her appointment transitioned to the Earth Sciences Department, where her expertise in atmospheric measurements found an even stronger institutional home.
We are proud to have been part of Ilse's academic journey and celebrate this well-deserved recognition. Her scientific excellence, mentorship, and societal commitment exemplify the values we cherish at VU.
