What is Teal Helix?
Teal Helix is an EU-funded research initiative dedicated to developing personalized, cutting-edge solutions that promote sustainable food choices. With a €6.5 million grant from the European Research Council, this four-year project (2024-2028) unites experts in marketing, psychology, environmental science, and information science, alongside leading companies in the communication, retail, and standard-setting industries. Spanning 11 European countries—Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland—Teal Helix is at the forefront of interdisciplinary collaboration to reshape food consumption habits.
VU Amsterdam’s Leading Role
VU Amsterdam plays a pivotal role in the project, with Michail Kokkoris, Associate Professor in the Marketing Department at the School of Business and Economics, serving on the Executive Board, as well as leading Work Package 4 (WP4). This work package focuses on designing behavioral interventions to promote sustainable food consumption. Prof. Kokkoris coordinates four research teams from VU Amsterdam, KU Leuven, University of Groningen, and AdCogito, all of which employ experimental research methods to develop innovative behavioral interventions. In the next phase, these interventions will be tested in real-world settings in collaboration with European retailers, leveraging cutting-edge AI technology. The VU Amsterdam-led research team also includes postdoctoral researcher Jonathan D’Hondt and research assistant Alina Kaufmann.
