Wednesday 24 September 2025, Bart Vink, chair of the South District Council, together with Marcel Nollen, Executive Board of VU University Amsterdam, and Matrix director Ivo Sweep were present at the ground-breaking ceremony of a new Matrix Innovation Center at the VU Campus.
Matrix Innovation Center will host university-related activity such as start-ups, scale-ups and external companies in the field of Life Sciences, Medtech and AI. The aim is to stimulate and accommodate entrepreneurship, valorisation and cooperation between universities and business. Demonstrator Lab VU, currently housed in the W&N building, will also be given a prominent place as an incubator for research and innovation.
Growth and innovation
The development of this new Matrix Innovation Center on the VU Campus fits into the strategic objectives of VU Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC and the City of Amsterdam to strengthen the start-up and scale-up community and, in a literal sense, give more room for growth and innovation.
Faster, smarter and more human-oriented
"VU Amsterdam is a place where high-quality research meets social commitment," said Marcel Nollen, member of the Executive Board of VU Amsterdam. "Our mission is to contribute to today's complex issues in research and education, with scientific excellence as well as societal impact. The new Matrix Innovation Center on the VU Campus offers a unique opportunity to further strengthen and bundle this impact. A place that enables the care of the future: faster, smarter and more human-oriented."
