2 October 2025
The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology's own Marjo de Theije brings Suriname to life on the big screen! Watch De Goudlijn & O ouro surpreende a gente, exploring gold mining and its communities, and join a post-screening discussion with the directors at Wereldmuseum Leiden on October 19.

On October 19, 2025, the Wereldmuseum Leiden presents a special screening of De Goudlijn and O ouro surpreende a gente, featuring VU Amsterdam social and cultural anthropologist Marjo de Theije.

These two films take audiences to Suriname: from the historic “Gold Line” connecting Paramaribo to the gold mines (De Goudlijn), to life around gold mining in Brokopondo and Paramaribo (O ouro surpreende a gente).

After the screening, directors Hans Hylkema and Marjo de Theije will lead a discussion about the films, offering insight into the social, cultural, and historical significance of gold mining in Suriname.

  • Date & Time: October 19, 13:30 – 14:45
  • Location: Grote Zaal (Main Hall), Wereldmuseum Leiden, Steenstraat 1, 2312 BS Leiden
  • Language: Dutch/Sranan and Portuguese spoken
  • Ticket Price: €5 (museum entrance not included)

This event is a unique opportunity to experience Suriname’s gold stories through anthropology and film, and engage directly with the filmmakers.

Marjo de Theije is Professor of The Anthropology of Resources, which studies resource extraction's cultural, social, economic, and environmental aspects.
