Since its inception in 1986, WTMC has been a cornerstone of the development of Science, Technology, & Society (STS) studies in the Netherlands. The school both co-ordinates and stimulates research in science and technology studies, innovation studies, and cultural analysis of science and technology; and familiarises students with theories, methodologies, and approaches to studying the interaction between science, technology, and society. The ideas and theoretical contributions from WTMC members have often been taken as the measure of the strength of STS in the Netherlands. But the relational intellectual infrastructure of WTMC, including its PhD training programme that has connected budding scholars over nearly four decades, is probably the best explanation for the success of this vibrant and thriving field.
As the new ‘caretaker’ of WTMC, Teun Zuiderent-Jerak reflects upon the his past involvement and shares his hope for the future:
"Having joined WTMC in the early 2000s as a PhD student, I fondly recall the interesting conversations and expansive thinking shared with fellow members. During my tenure as caretaker, I look forward to fostering many connections with WTMC members, and warmly welcoming new PhD students into our community. After all, strong cohorts of bright and committed PhD students give us the best chances for a strong future, and will help us navigate the political and financial challenges ahead."
