26 March 2025
Assoc. Prof. Imran Avci from the Biophotonics and Medical Imaging Group at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has been awarded a €1 million funding from the NWO Open Technology Programme for her pioneering work on the SPHOTED project.

This prestigious project aims to revolutionize photonic processors for smart edge devices by introducing a radically new material, thin-film BTO, on a scalable photonic platform. The SPHOTED project is set to develop single-chip, low-power photonic processors that are not only more efficient but also significantly more advanced than current technology. These processors will feature on-chip lasers, optical waveguides with more than two times lower losses, and optical modulators that offer over 80 times reduction in energy consumption, all while minimizing thermal issues compared to traditional Si-based hardware.

This groundbreaking work will enhance the functionality of smart edge devices across various applications, including autonomous vehicles, medical Point-of-Care devices, 5G communication, and IoT devices.
Assoc. Prof. Imran Avci is collaborating with colleagues Prof. Nicola Calabretta from TU Eindhoven, Bart Kooi from the University of Groningen, and the innovative team at Rapid Photonics. Together, they are setting new benchmarks in the photonic sector and paving the way for future advancements.
