After years of discussion, student housing in Kronenburg after all

The municipality of Amstelveen may build student housing in the Kronenburg neighborhood, near Schiphol Airport. Minister Robert Tiemen of Infrastructure and Water Management (BBB) has given the municipality the green light.

Vice President of the Executive Board Marcel Nollen, along with other higher education institutions and the municipality, has been pushing hard for the arrival of the housing in recent years. "This is desperately needed to do something for all those students in housing need. I am extremely proud that we have achieved this together," Nollen said.

For years there was discussion about the arrival of the housing which, like a large part of Amstelveen and Uilenstede, would be under the approach route of Schiphol Airport. In order to build in the area, an exception procedure was required. The Environmental and Transport Inspectorate initially refused to grant the permit. Now the government has decided to make an exception, based on a municipal plan that focuses on sound-adaptive construction, temporary housing and housing a target group that, according to the GGD, is less sensitive to noise pollution from air traffic.

In total, 438 student homes are involved. Alderman for Spatial Planning Floor Gordon has indicated that provided this can be done in a healthy and responsible manner, she will remain committed to the possibility of adding more housing in the future.
