On 9 October 2025, the Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law hosted a Research Seminar following the PhD defence of Isabella Leroy.
We were pleased to welcome William Walters (Carleton University) and Tuğba Başaran (University of Cambridge), both members of Isabella Leroy’s PhD committee, who presented their recent work:
- Buses, Vans, Deportations; Or Border Politics after Walter Benjamin – William Walters
- Stories of legal borders: on statecraft, law and violence – Tugba Basaran
Their presentations prompted stimulating and thought-provoking discussions on migration, borders, and law. Hemme Battjes and Gareth Davies, both professors at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, provided insightful responses.
The seminar offered an excellent opportunity for scholarly exchange and critical reflection on current debates in migration and border studies.
