Share
14 September 2024
VU Amsterdam anthropology's PhD student Rachma Lutfiny Putri was awarded the prestigious Wadsworth International Fellowship from the Wenner-Gren Foundation.

Putri's PhD will explore the waste recycle commodity chain in Indonesian cities with a focus on the recycle chain of plastics, one of the most common waste materials in Indonesia and the Global South. Her doctoral project is set to explore some thought-provoking questions: How is value created within the waste recycle commodity chain, to explore who are the key beneficiaries in this process and how do company-led initiatives compare with community or civil society-led recycling efforts. Her PhD will be suprvised by Dr Freek Colombijn and Dr Maaike Matelski.

Prior to her PhD, Putri wrote her MSc thesis on the multi-layered precariousness of waste picker women in South Jakarta and received predoctoral training from the our department funded by the Stimulation Grant led by Prof. Dimitris Dalakoglou from the Dutch Ministry of Education and FSW-VU. She received additional training from the inter-university consortium Netherlands School of Anthropology (NESA) and the European Association of Social Anthropologists Summer School. Currently she is also affiliated as a Visiting Fellow at Populi Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Wenner-Gren Foundation
is a USA based funder of anthropological research and its grants are very competitive.
