VU Open Access Innovation Fund contributes to the success of bioRxiv and medRxiv

11 September 2024
The Open Access Innovation Fund of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam supports open, free, and fair publication alternatives. The support for bioRxiv and medRxiv is bearing fruit: the number of preprints on the servers is increasing. Founders John Inglis and Richard Sever expressed their gratitude for (financial) support from, among others, VU Amsterdam.

Faster access to research results
The bioRxiv server was established in 2013 with the aim of providing a free online archive and distribution service for unpublished preprints in the life sciences. Following this example, medRxiv was launched in 2019, focusing on the health sciences. Thanks to both servers, scientific findings can be immediately shared with society, and researchers receive feedback on their work before it is published in a journal.

Support and appreciation
Criticism of expensive journals has been growing for years, which explains the increasing popularity of alternatives like bioRxiv and medRxiv. However, with this growth come higher costs for the platforms, which are seeking sustainable funding methods. They are therefore grateful to benefit from various revenue streams, such as donations from institutions. In an interview, founders John Inglis and Richard Sever expressed their gratitude for the support from institutions including Stanford, MIT, Caltech, CNRS, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Imperial College, University of Washington, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. They emphasized that this support highlights the value of their systems for researchers at these institutions.

A central hub for pre-prints
Both founders have an optimistic outlook on the future. They aim for further growth to promote the rapid, open, and free exchange of biomedical research. Additionally, they want the servers to serve as platforms for experimentation and innovation, with the goal of improving the way research results are shared and recognized. Through these efforts, the duo hopes that preprints will take on a more central role in scientific communication.
