You have probably already seen some of the VU in Motion campaign on campus: the felts ‘Have a break’, the exhortations ‘Take the stairs’ or the tip to do consultations while walking (‘walk to talk’). With these, VU in Motion calls attention to the inactivity pandemic we are - literally - in. So, get moving. It is important for sustainable health that you do this not just for one week, but that you move throughout the day. This can look like this:
- Schedule a 2-minute ‘sitting break’ 6 to 8 times a day, moving all major muscle groups for a while.
- Take the stairs at least once a day! Both up and down.
- And when meeting 2 to 3 people, consider taking a small walk. You will find that it does wonders for health, productivity and creativity!
Consequences
The consequences of prolonged inactivity are far reaching. We are at greater risk of neck, arm and shoulder complaints, as well as diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, depression, cancer and even premature death. VU is also part of the sitting culture that has almost replaced natural exercise worldwide. We want to change that. Will you join us?
