UN Expert Consultation in Brussel

Share
11 November 2024
At the end of October, ACMRL partnered with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to co-organize a UN Expert Consultation in Brussels.

The event centered on developing a groundbreaking joint General Recommendation/Comment by the UN Committees on Migrant Workers (CMW) and the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). This initiative aims to combat xenophobia and its detrimental impact on the rights of migrants and non-nationals.

Hosted at Vrije Universiteit Brussel on October 30–31, the consultation formed part of a global effort to address the structural and multidimensional challenges posed by xenophobia in migration contexts.

The event brought together regional and thematic experts to share insights, best practices, and challenges, contributing to the refinement of the draft General Recommendation/Comment. The discussions emphasized the importance of crafting comprehensive public policies to combat xenophobia and strengthen human rights protections for migrant communities.

By fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange, the consultation sought to ensure that policies not only counter xenophobia but also promote inclusivity and social cohesion. This meeting builds on earlier expert discussions hosted by ACMRL at VU Amsterdam, marking a significant step in this critical global initiative.
