Pilot collection of organic waste in Transitorium: an update

19 November 2024
This summer we started a pilot for the collection of organic waste in pantries 1B40a, 2B40a and 3B40a in the Transitorium building: an update.

The pilot runs until September. The organic waste bins will be emptied every day and the bins will be cleaned regularly.

We will also start collecting separate waste for plastic packaging and drinking cartons and residual waste at the same time. Please note: deposit cans can be deposited at the machine in the Main Building, opposite coffee corner Main Street.

Update September 2024

The GFT pilot has now been running for over 2 months, an update.

Analysis of the waste showed that this time there was a lot of food waste in the residual waste. On one of the floors, almost half of the residual waste consisted of GFT. This was mainly because a large plastic container of food was thrown into the residual waste. Furthermore, we see that quite a few tea bags and wooden stirrers still end up in the residual waste; these may go in the organic waste bin.

Other findings

  • The organic waste and P/D streams look clean (visual check); little to no contamination
  • No complaints about nuisance received during GFT collection (fruit flies, smell, etc.)
  • The quantity of residual waste was limited due to the holiday period (therefore also relatively much pollution)

Update November 2024

The pilot is coming to an end, herewith the results of the latest analysis carried out.

Analysis of the waste shows that there is only 7% GFE in residual waste this time. These are mainly tea bags and wooden stirrers. Moreover, the GFE collected was ‘approved’; meaning it was not contaminated. A great result!

We received two reports during the pilot, about the bin not being emptied and nuisance caused by fruit flies. Both reports hung together. The main conclusion is that when the bin is emptied on time, no nuisance occurs.

The pilot is now completed and an evaluation will follow soon. Preliminary conclusion: collecting GFE leads to good results and does not cause nuisance (provided bins are fitted with a lid and emptied on time). This offers possibilities for elsewhere on campus. The question is what larger-scale collection means (e.g. extra hours) and how best to organise the disposal/processing of organic waste. We are discussing this with our waste supplier PreZero.

Together towards Zero waste by 2030.
