This finding suggests that a significant number of young people are building sustainable careers, which not only contributes to their own well-being but also enhances their relationships, leisure activities, and overall life satisfaction.
Sustainable careers
“Sustainable careers are essential for our well-being and overall life satisfaction,” says Nguyen. “The fact that so many young people feel happy, healthy, and productive in their work indicates that it is possible to have a fulfilling career in today’s job market.” Her research further reveals that employees can improve their career sustainability and, consequently, their quality of life within just six weeks. “It’s remarkable how quickly people can make changes to make their careers more sustainable,” Nguyen adds. Sustainable careers also positively impact the immediate work environment. People surrounded by managers, colleagues, or partners who are happy, healthy, and productive are more likely to build sustainable careers themselves. “When you’re surrounded by people with a positive attitude towards their work, it reflects on you,” Nguyen explains.
Balance
However, Nguyen emphasizes that it is not always possible to maintain the highest levels of happiness, health, and productivity at all times. “There will be moments when you need to focus more on productivity, for instance, when pursuing a promotion,” Nguyen notes. “But it’s important that organizations don’t view these temporary peaks and troughs as inherently negative. On the contrary, they can act as catalysts for positive change and growth.”
Prioritizing well-being and productivity in organizations
Nguyen urges organizations to prioritize the well-being and productivity of their employees. “People are the most valuable resources of any organization, and it is in the interest of both the employee and the employer to invest in creating an environment where sustainable careers can thrive”, Nguyen concludes.
