Matrix Innovation Center for Life Sciences/Medtech/AI comes to VU Campus

26 September 2024
In mid-2027, Matrix Innovation Centers will open its newest building on the VU Campus, at the corner of De Boelelaan and Korte Mahlerlaan, next to the Research Building.

The environmental permit is currently being applied for and construction is scheduled to start in May next year.

The Innovation Centre building will house university-related activity such as start-ups, scale-ups and external companies in the field of Life Sciences, Medtech and AI. The aim of this building is to encourage and accommodate entrepreneurship, valorisation, and collaboration between universities and industry by creating space for various users. The building will also give the Demonstrator Lab VU, currently housed in the W&N building, a prominent place as a breeding ground for research and innovation.

In 2022, VU Amsterdam became a partner in Matrix IC in which, besides VU Amsterdam, the University of Amsterdam, the City of Amsterdam and Rabobank also participate. Matrix currently operates 7 Innovation Centres on the Amsterdam Science Park, which together house more than 100 scientific companies, from startups and scale-ups to spin-ins of larger enterprises.

The development of the Innovation Center building on the VU Campus fits into the strategic objectives of VU Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC and the City of Amsterdam to strengthen the start-up and scale-up community and, in a literal sense, give more space for growth and innovation.
