Jorien Vonk and Fleur van Crimpen nominated for the Klokhuis Wetenschapsprijs

22 February 2024
Researchers Jorien Vonk and Fleur van Crimpen have been nominated for the Klokhuis Wetenschapsprijs. Their research into what happens when the Arctic warms puts them in the top 10. You can vote from February 26!

The price is intended to introduce a young and broad audience to scientific research. A great opportunity to tell more about research in the Arctic. The two earth scientists conduct research in Northern Canada and Alaska and analyse what it means that the climate at the poles is becoming increasingly warmer and wetter, especially near polar rivers and coasts.

Arctic warming
They research on land, as well as on boats and large research vessels. This way they can properly research the rivers, coastal seas and ocean. Measuring water in polar rivers can be compared to blood tests at the doctor. The doctor checks how healthy you are, Vonk and van Crimpen check how healthy the area through which the river flows is. They conclude that climate change is changing these areas and making them less healthy. They also discovered that polar coasts are wearing away faster and faster, and all this material ends up in the sea. This has a major impact on the oceans and the animals and people who live here.

Vote now
Vote for this important research from Monday February 26 and ensure that Jorien Vonk and Fleur van Crimpen receive the well-deserved price on Sunday March 17.
