To draw attention to Earth's fragile natural environment, we turn off the lights. Millions of people, companies and municipalities have been taking action for the planet in this way every year since 2007.
VU Amsterdam in the dark
Sustainability is one of VU Amsterdam's three spearheads, not only in our scientific research and teaching, but also in our business operations. By default, every evening after closing time, the facade and logo lighting of the Main Building, Initium, the O|2 Lab Building and ACTA is off, as well as part of the exterior lighting.
During Earth Hour, we go one step further. We then extinguish lights on campus in all places where research and teaching and safety allow. The lampposts on the campus square will remain on.
Saving energy
Turning off the lights for an hour around the world saves energy, but it is above all a symbolic action. Because Earth Hour contributes to energy saving by creating awareness and changing behaviour. And saving energy has a positive effect on nature.
Join in too!
Show that you care about nature by turning off the lights for one hour on Saturday evening, at home or anywhere else where the lights can be switched off.
