Get moving and help maintain the community garden

Share
30 April 2024
Did you know that gardening also contributes to the healthy exercise standard of at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a day?

VU in Motion has launched a new project in collaboration with the Community Garden, Community Gardening! Get moving and help maintain our university's rooftop garden. This pilot project is located on the third floor of the main building, directly above StudentenDok. You can reach the garden via the stairs next to StudentDok entrance. To ensure coordinated care of our garden, we ask you to participate in garden activities only at set times. Connect with other garden lovers and stay informed by joining our gardening group chat on the 3D WhatsApp community.

VU in Motion
VU in Beweging aims to get staff and students to move a bit more on and around the VU Campus. It has been scientifically proven that (more) exercise leads to (more) physical and mental health. VU is also part of the sitting culture that has almost replaced natural exercise worldwide. And we want to change that! Each week, we will provide a tip or a 'knew-you-that' to encourage you to comply with one of the three exercise guidelines. These guidelines for adults and the elderly are as follows:

  • Exercise is good, more exercise is better. Do at least 150 (preferably 210) minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, spread over several days.
  • Do 2-3x/week an intensive(er) workout of 30-60 min, focusing on strength and fitness, for the elderly additionally combined with balance exercises.
  • And, avoid sitting still a lot! In other words, half an hour of exercise/sports a day cannot compensate for the damage of further prolonged sitting still. 2 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every 20 minutes has very positive effects.
