Designing Universities for Impact in Innovation Ecosystems:Lessons for Amsterdam

6 February 2024
The VU Center for Entrepreneurship hosted an engaging workshop last month featuring Professor Uzi de Haan (prof.em at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology), sharing valuable insights on "Designing Universities for Impact in Innovation Ecosystems."

The event, held at VU campus on January 31, brought together a diverse audience of about 20 people eager to learn from Professor de Haan's experiences, particularly focusing on the case of Cornell Tech in New York City.

Professor Uzi de Haan, with a distinguished background in entrepreneurship, played a crucial role in establishing the Bronica Entrepreneurship Center at the Technion. As a visiting professor at Cornell affiliation, he launched the startup postdoc program Runway at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute in NYC, showcasing his commitment to translating research into commercial applications.

During the workshop, Professor Uzi de Haan provided a captivating overview of the establishment of Cornell Tech affiliation in response to the 2008 financial crisis. His talk centered around the university's role in diversifying New York City's economy and becoming a Tech City. Attendees gained insights into the unique design features and programs that have made Cornell Tech a successful model for integrating academia, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship. All in all, the workshop appeared to be an important lesson for the Amsterdam Entrepreneurial Ecosystem.
