Sarphati Amsterdam is a unique scientific research institute in Amsterdam. In Sarphati Amsterdam, the City of Amsterdam and the knowledge institutions VU Amsterdam, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam UMC (locations VUmc & AMC) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences join forces under the motto ‘research for healthy living’. Sarphati Institute researches what children need to grow up healthy in the city. In 2018, a longitudinal study started in which Amsterdam children are followed as they grow up: the Sarphati Cohort.
Sarphati Cohort
Within the Sarphati Cohort, (after parental consent) data are collected on the growth and development of children aged 0 to 18 years in Amsterdam. Data collection takes place during consultations at the Youth Health Care Department of the Amsterdam Public Health Service or the SAG (Stichting Amsterdamse Gezondheidscentra). In addition, data is collected with age-specific questionnaires. This data providesinsight into development in the areas of sleep, growth, nutrition and exercise. There is a constant influx of new participants from all city districts. The cohort now has more than 12,000 participants. Maartje Basten, researcher at VU Amsterdam, says: ‘The Sarphati Cohort offers countless opportunities. It is a valuable source of knowledge and data on the causes and possible approaches to children's health problems in the city. This is valuable for researchers and policymakers in the region, but is also of national and international interest.'
Conducting research with data from the Sarphati Cohort
Researchers can submit research proposals through Sarphati Amsterdam to make use of anonymous data from the Sarphati Cohort. It is also possible to start your own data collection within a subgroup of the Sarphati Cohort (sub-cohort research). With the research results, professionals and policymakers can then provide better support and advice to parents on how to help their child grow up healthily.
