Conclusion NWA project to teach IPCC report findings

3 July 2024
Through an NWA grant, VU Amsterdam, together with partners, is presenting IPCC report findings in an accessible and engaging way to school pupils in the Netherlands.

The EduGIS Foundation, the Geofort science centre and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam received an NWA grant from NWO to introduce school children to the latest academic research from the IPCC report in an engaging and accessible way.

To inform the project team about the content of the IPCC report and what should be featured in the educational modules, ASI organised an expert session with ASI researchers. Takeaways included the importance of system thinking and that the teachers also have to be trained for climate education to be effective.

Using the EduGIS platform and maps, three new atlases have been created which can be found on the EduGIS website: Greenlandenergy transition and flood protection. These atlases can be used independently by teacher to use for their lessons, for example by devising their own assignments or having students work with the maps in an exploratory way.

The atlases and lessons are available in Dutch, English and other languages and are structured in levels from grade 8 to 6 VWO. These levels serve as an indication and can be adapted to the student's level. As next steps, promotional videos and animations will be produced for use on social media to reach teachers and joint promotional initiatives with other initiatives are planned.
